Open Doors

Open Doors

Open doors matter in the eternal scheme of things, for they invite connection in a way few things can.

“Make sure the doors remain closed.”

It’s a thought that runs through my mind often, and one I share with my kids on a regular basis, especially when we’re expecting guests in our home. Some messes are best hidden behind closed doors.

At least, that’s what I used to think.

I often tend to keep the front rooms of the house clean and orderly, welcoming all to see them in their state of near perfection. But the clutter, the untidiness, the disorganization of other rooms and closets in other parts of the house are best left unseen by wandering eyes, just like the areas of my life that I keep hidden from view–my weaknesses, past misgivings, current hardships–that, if “seen” would surely lower people’s opinion of me, for that part of me is quite messy.

I’ve always felt safer when certain things are hidden away behind “closed doors”.

But no more.

Today, as I spring clean my house–scrubbing, sorting, tossing–I think of the “spring cleaning” I’ve been doing in my life as well–forgiving myself and others, setting goals to overcome weaknesses, accepting my limitations for what they are and being okay with that, learning from the past but looking forward to a bright future–and I realize that I’ve been doing it all wrong.

I should have been keeping the doors open, for in many ways our “messes” unite us.

Open doors lead to honesty, vulnerability, and more connection.

Conclusion

While the rooms in my house and my life are in better shape at the moment, they are far from perfect, far from ideal, but I’ve resolved to be courageous and leave the doors open. After all, as Kris Camealy said:

“It’s okay to let people see you in process. It’s the most honest thing we can do.”
