Protecting our homes and families from fiery darts is largely the responsibility of mothers and grandmothers. Here are some things to consider:

A Battle With Fiery Darts

Several years ago, while standing at my kitchen sink, I heard someone behind me call out, “Watch out, Mama! There’s a fiery dart headed your way!

Without hesitating, I released the dish I was holding, flung myself around, and dropped to my knees behind the kitchen island. Desperate for some kind of protection, I slowly reached my hand to the top of the island and pulled down the first thing it touched—a dirty dinner plate.

It would have to do.

Shielding my face with the dinner plate, I peered around the corner and caught a glimpse of the enemy—-a six-year-old boy, dressed in full armor, hiding behind a bench.

Upon further inspection, I could see that he was pointing another fiery dart in my direction.

I yanked my head back just in time to avoid being hit.

One thing was certain, I needed a plan and I needed one quick, for the enemy was coming in for the kill.

Tragically, in my haste, I made a careless leap around the corner and was immediately struck by a fiery dart.

Falling to the ground in defeat, I watched helplessly as the enemy did his little victory dance.

How I wished that I had had my armor on that day!

The Shield of Faith

The scriptures tell us to “[take] the shield of faith wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephesians 6:16).

Satan’s fiery darts are flying all around us. I’ve found myself wondering if my armor is sufficiently strong enough to withstand the attacks of the enemy.

In that moment, my son was well-protected, covered nearly head to toe with armor. The question was—would that protection, as well as his ability to recognize “fiery darts”, continue with each passing year?

A Call To Mothers and Grandmothers

Mothers and grandmothers, as mentioned before, it is our responsibility to guard our homes and our children and grandchildren from evil influences that desire to “creep” into our homes and families. In 2 Timothy 3:1-6 we read:

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous , boasters, proud , blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful , unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts ,

An Invitation To Guard Our Homes

Titus 2: 4-5 reminds women that it is our privilege and opportunity to guard our homes from outside influences:

4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home (housekeeper, guard), good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Things to consider:

Do you feel pressured to conform to the latest technological trends (phones, apps, social media platforms, etc.), regardless of the negative influence those trends may have in your home, and on family members?

What type of movies, music, and entertainment are permitted in your home?

Is the artwork on your walls beautiful and uplifting?

What types of books are read by the members of your family?

Do family members spend quality time together, including around the dinner table each evening?

In what ways do you guard your home from the negative influences and fiery darts that try to creep in?
