Over the years, many people have asked what our homeschool looks like.
What curriculum do we use?
What is our daily schedule like?
While the look and feel of our homeschool has evolved over the years, the following is what I have discovered works best for our family:
1) A PERSONALIZED, BALANCED APPROACH: to encourage “personalized opportunities to grow spiritually, socially, physically, and intellectually through gospel learning, service and activities, and personal development” which, incidentally, is exactly what the new Come Follow Me Program for Children and Youth in our church entails. (Elder M. Russell Ballard recently referred to this form of learning as “Celestial learning—a heavenly pattern of learning”—and I couldn’t agree more.)
2) EXTENDED PERIODS OF FOCUSED LEARNING: One or two classes a day, focusing on a single task for an extended period of time. Excellence is not fractured. Work is manageable and focused. In this environment, deep and effective learning can take place.
I respect a person’s right to educate their children the way they choose and appreciate the respect our family has received over the years as we’ve chosen the path of homeschooling.
If, by chance, you are considering homeschooling in the future, allow me to clear up a misunderstanding that occurs far too often in our society:
Mothers, far and wide, claim they could never homeschool because they don’t have the patience to do so.
Let me be clear…not only do homeschooling moms not have the patience they desire to homeschool their children on a daily basis, oftentimes year-round, but you, as a “potential homeschooling mom” are not allowed to have patience, as it would make the rest of us look bad. lol
Life is an adventure! Discover what education works best for your family and then embrace it with your whole heart and soul.
